Labels: offset vs digital vs flexographic printing
Self-adhesive labels are printed with three main technologies: offset, digital and flexography. Each has different strengths depending on run length, quality and substrate. Below is a comparison and the bulleted advantages of offset.
Offset label printing
Offset (at DTL, semi-rotary UV web offset on the Miyakoshi MLP) delivers the highest quality and colour fidelity for medium and large runs. It enables Pantone spot colours, fine detail, inline finishing (hot stamping, UV varnish) and a low unit cost at higher volumes.
Digital label printing
Digital printing works best for very short runs and variable data (numbering, personalisation). It has fast setup but a higher unit cost at larger volumes, usually simulates spot colours from CMYK and often needs separate machines for finishing.
Flexography
Flexography prints from flexible plates. It can be economical for very long runs and certain substrates, but involves plate-making cost and usually lower detail resolution than offset.

Which technology to choose?
